USCIS offers different ways to check your case status
There are different ways to check your case status with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly INS and BCIS). They are:
1. Since October 2002, you can check your case status online by going to the USCIS case status search page, where you need to enter your application receipt number. For general information on checking the status of your case online, read this article.

2. If you filed your application at a Service Center (California, Nebraska, Texas, or Vermont), there are three ways to obtain your case status: ***

You may also obtain your case status by calling the National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283. Follow the automated instructions and have your receipt number ready.
In writing: For applications filed with a local USCIS office, you can write to that USCIS office. You will find the local office addresses on the USCIS Field Offices homepage. In your letter, please include the following:
- Your current name and address, and, if different, your name as it appears on your application;
- Any A-number, which is an 8 or 9 digit number following the letter "A", assigned to you or to your application;
- Your date of birth;
- The date and place where your application was filed;
- Any receipt number from any receipt notice issued by INS or USCIS for your application;
- A copy of the most recent notice sent to you by INS or USCIS on your case, if you have received one; and
- The date and office where you were fingerprinted and where you were interviewed, if this has been done.
Sign your request, or, if you are preparing the request for the applicant, have him or her sign the request. Please mark your envelope: ATTN: Status Inquiry.

Walk-in: If you choose to go to the local USCIS office that is processing your application, please take the following:
- Any A-number, which is an 8 or 9 digit number following the letter "A", assigned to you or to your application;
- The date and place where your application was filed;
- Any receipt number from any receipt notice issued by INS or USCIS for your application;
- A copy of the most recent notice sent to you by INS or USCIS on your case, if you have received one; and
- The date and office where you were fingerprinted and where you were interviewed, if this has been done.
***Exception to the above: If, although you filed your application with a Service Center, your last contact with the USCIS was from one of USCIS local offices (e.g. you received a notice to appear for interview at that location or you were interviewed at that location) please contact the local office directly, rather than the Service Center.
